With the way that the world has been lately, we have gotten away from taking the time out to write a blog. As I thought about it, now, probably more than ever, we should be blogging.  This is an unprecedented time for us, for our children, for our farm.

My husband and I are both healthcare workers.  We work a lot of hours and are so very thankfully that we have jobs during this crazy time.  At the same time, we so badly wish that we could be home and taking care of our children consistently and offering them some type of normalcy during all of this.  While we are all dealing with changes, I can’t even imagine what it would be like to be a child and have my entire world and everything that I knew, just be turned upside down.

We definitely work to stay busy.  Our farm is a never-ending job.  With the kids all being home from school we have been working to educate them and also teach them life skills that they need to learn.  We have spent time planting our seedlings so the kids got to learn about what plants need in order to grow.  We have planted our asperagus bed and the kids learned about the importance of removing the rocks and even some types of different rocks.  They have learned how to separate and rebuild some rabbit cages and that our animals are every bit as important as us.  They are learning to feed and water the animals and make sure that they have what they need because we rely on them too.

We have also started some of our incubators with eggs from the different birds on the farm.  We will be spending time talking about the development of the baby in the egg.  We will discuss how important every life is.  It is really amazing to watch these kids learn and grow.

We also have some new goats that are getting ready to kid.  Kidding season is always a wonderful and yet stressful time.  I am like a nervous grandmother and make frequent trips out to check on the mommas.  I always worry that something will go wrong (usually they do fine) but I would feel terrible if I didn’t help and there was something that I could do.  Thankfully, my husband is amazing and between him, myself and our oldest daughter, we were able to give everyone some needed hoof care, update all of the vaccines and deworm everyone to make sure that they stay healthy.  We even gave their vitamin boosters to make sure they aren’t deficient before they deliver.  It was wonderful having my husband and daughter helping to do all of it.  It took hours and was worth every minute, not to mention, our daughter learned some important lessons as she wants to be a vet someday.

With the fluctuating weather it is difficult for us to be outside some days.  We have been taking advantage of the nicer days and have been clearing brush for the new pastures and two days ago, the kids learned how to put in a window and frame it in.  We had talked about how the chickens need day light in order to lay eggs.  We discussed how when they get adequate light, they lay more eggs.  With that lesson, they put a window in the chicken coop in order to provide the ladies more light while they sit in their nesting boxes.

So overall, I think that we have really been blessed during this COVID-19 time.  We are healthy and happy.  We are working together to make the most of each and every day, no matter what may happen.  Our hope is that our friends, families and acquaintances are doing the same. Stay safe.
